Solids Separation

Solids separators allow the removal of the solids component out of dairy effluent. This enables the farmer to spread this solids component further than the area covered by their effluent irrigation system (by using a muck spreader).  It effectively turns the whole farm into an effluent block allowing for efficient use of their effluent nutrients.

Solids separators are considered when there is a high volume of effluent to deal with. Effluent volume is increased through longer time on feedpads, greater effluent production due to the higher feeding levels, and also the dropped feed that ends up in the effluent.

Separators are also used in conjunction with low-rate application systems such as the Larall and K-Line systems.

High input farms bring in a significant part of their annual maintenance fertiliser requirements in their supplementary feed. So it makes good sense to ensure that this nutrient is spread effectively at rates determined by the farm nutrient budget.

On a farm that is increasing production, solids separators present an alternative option to extending the reticulation of an effluent irrigation system in order to cater for growing effluent volumes to be spread.
