Stone Traps

Why do you need a Stone Trap?

Every Dairy Effluent system needs a Stone Trap, and if they are well maintained will pay for themselves many times over. A Stone Trap is seen as essential to remove as much of the unwanted solids as possible from the Dairy Effluent which helps to prevent
  • Sand, stones and other foreign material from causing pumps to wear quicker than expected
  • Blockages in Dairy Effluent lines
  • A build up of unwanted sediment in sumps and ponds

It is important to locate the Stone Trap in an area where it is easy to clean and maintain, and allows for gravity feed to the next stage in the system.

Choosing the size of the Stone Trap that is suitable for the farm is important as there are many factors to consider. Stone Traps can range considerably in size and there are measures for this, so get expert advice before installing one.

Solids Storage Area

We recommend having a sealed storage area constructed for the storage of the solids from your Stone Trap. It is a requirement of most Councils to have a sealed storage area if you intend to store farm Dairy Effluent solids rather than applying it directly to the land, which then drains into the Dairy Effluent system to prevent leaching. Having a solids storage area will also encourage your Stone Trap to be cleaned out regularly rather than only when there is enough time to clean and then apply it directly to the land.
